šŸŽµ OneFootball x Jack Savoretti: Daniele De Rossi is able to save Genoa this season

As part of OneFootball’s collaboration series with Shoot Music, we’re interviewing an artist each week about their love of football.

This week it’s Genoa fan, Jack Savoretti.

When did you start supporting Genoa and why?

I have been supporting Genoa since I was born. It’s a family tradition – I think my great uncle was the last president to win the league with Genoa. So red and blue are the colors of my DNA.

What are your favorite memories of Genoa?

I have two. One of them was going to watch Genoa against Liverpool in the UEFA Cup with my father. We ended up beating them at Anfield, which was the first time an Italian club had done that. My greatest memory now is two seasons ago.

I took my son when Genoa were in Serie B for the last game of the season, which led to their promotion. It was his first time going to a real football match, his first time going to see Genoa and it was unbelievable. We sat down with the whole team and watching them go from League Two to League One is, for general fans, almost the best thing about winning the Champions League. So that was amazing.

Do you think Genoa has what it takes to stay in Serie A at the end of the season?

I think Genoa will stay in the Italian League. Losing Patrick Vieira was a huge blow – I loved him, but I think he probably lost the dressing room and certainly lost the club. The fans seem to have turned against him as well, which is not great at all in Genoa, which is one of the oldest fan bases in Italy and a very strong fan base. There is no reason why we can’t stay awake.

The team is there, but with the way we have been playing and the system we have at the moment, it will not be enough to keep us in Serie A. It’s a shame to see teams like us and Fiorentina fighting for survival, but that’s Serie A today.

How excited are you about Daniele De Rossi taking over?

I’m a big fan of De Rossi. I have had many glorious nights as an Italian fan thanks to De Rossi, so I will be forever grateful to him. I’m happy to have him on the bench. I think he’ll bring something to help us stay awake.

Tell us about your new single ā€œDo It For Loveā€…

I wrote this song with a very good friend of mine, Myles Kane, who is another great football guy. We ended up writing it without any intention, without any purpose or reason. It was just something we wanted to do. It was just one of those things where we were able to tap into our subconscious together, like we do when we’re hanging out and talking about the same romance.

What I love most about this song is that it was only when I took it on the road this summer and played it live that I realized what it was about. It’s not a love song. It’s a song about doing whatever you do in life, whether that’s playing soccer, supporting a soccer team, finding the woman or man of your dreams or the way you look into your children’s eyes and the way you handle each day.

The best way to deal with it is to do it for love. That was a real moment I had on stage when I sang that song for the first time and I realized that sometimes you ask yourself, “What are you doing here? Why am I here?” I know the answer now is that I’m here because I’m doing it for love, and that’s what this song is about.
