During the conversation, Lauer mentioned that Shields shared in her memoir that antidepressants helped her with postpartum depression. The combative Cruz said Shields was spreading “misinformation” and falsely claimed that “there is no such thing as a chemical imbalance.”

Lauer and Cruise’s heated interview made headlines and currently has 13 million views on the “Today Show” YouTube channel.

Immediately after the incident, Shields addressed Cruz’s comments in a letter New York Times An editorial titled “War of Words” is a direct reference to Cruise’s 2005 film “War of the Worlds.”

In her new memoir, Shields revealed that she was “stunned” by Cruise’s comments, adding that his view was “an interesting opinion, coming from someone without ovaries.”

“If Tom had publicly attacked me before I became a mother, I probably would have kept quiet,” Shields writes. “I would have ignored his ridiculous talk. I would have probably just sat by while this very famous man hijacked my experience to further his own (deluded) agenda.

Shields continues, “Sitting quietly and letting myself be attacked may have been the approach I took a decade ago — I may have regretted sharing my story or felt insecure that my career might be faltering while a powerful movie star targeted me. I certainly didn’t have “I never had a chance in that fight, but now I am encouraged by life experience.”

Cruise eventually apologized, which Shields commented on, writing, “Not publicly, which would have been the right thing to do, but he came to my house and said he was sorry and that he felt trapped by Matt Lauer and that he attacked me.” Basically, because he can.”

“It wasn’t the best apology in the world, but he was able to give it, and I accepted it,” Shields writes.
