The United States will reportedly send 200 soldiers to Israel to support and monitor the ceasefire agreement

US troops were sent to Israel as part of the peace deal approved Thursday to support and help monitor the ceasefire, according to multiple news reports.
big US officials told reporters The Associated Press reported that 200 soldiers will initially be on the ground with the “Civil-Military Coordination Center” run by U.S. Central Command to help facilitate the flow of humanitarian aid as well as logistical and security assistance to the region devastated by the two-year-old war.
Reuters and ABC News also reported that military forces were being sent to Israel.
US officials said the troops are part of a broader team that also includes partner countries, nongovernmental organizations and private sector entities there to help monitor the peace agreement and the transition to civilian government in Gaza.
U.S. service members have already begun arriving in the area from around the world, according to one official, and will continue to travel to the area over the weekend to begin planning and setting up the center.
They added that no American forces will be sent to Gaza, and that about 200 American soldiers with experience in transportation, planning, security, logistics and engineering will work in the coordination center.
A federal appeals court is hearing arguments on whether Trump can federalize the Oregon National Guard
A federal appeals court heard arguments over whether Donald Trump has the authority to control 200 Oregon National Guard soldiers. The president had planned to deploy them in Portland, where protesters showed up dressed as frogs and chickens at mostly small nighttime demonstrations outside the Ice Building.
A three-judge panel in San Francisco on Thursday appeared likely to set aside the ruling blocking Trump’s deployment to Portland, which would clear the way for hundreds of soldiers to enter that city.
On Sunday, a judge approved a temporary restraining order preventing the move. Trump had mobilized California troops for Portland just hours after a judge first banned him from using the Oregon State Guard.
Stacy Chafin, an assistant attorney general in Oregon, echoed the language of the lower court judge who blocked Trump’s appointment, saying the president’s description of Portland as being riddled by violence was “out of touch with reality.”
The justices asked whether they should only consider current circumstances or take into account the more active protests earlier this year that temporarily closed Ice’s Portland headquarters.
U.S. Circuit Judge Ryan Nelson, a Trump appointee, said courts should not engage in a “daily” review of whether troops are needed at any given time.
Letitia James has been criminally charged in Trump’s latest effort to punish his rivals
Hello and welcome to the live American Politics blog. I’m Tom Ambrose and I’ll be bringing you all the latest news over the next few hours.
We start with the news A federal grand jury has indicted New York Attorney General Letitia James on bank fraud charges, according to a person familiar with the matter..
Lindsey Halligan, US Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia, said the case was personally presented to the grand jury on Thursday. U.S. attorneys do not typically appear before a grand jury.
“This is nothing more than a continuation of the President’s desperate use of our justice system as a weapon. He is forcing federal law enforcement agencies to do his bidding, all because I did my job as New York State’s Attorney General,” James said in a statement. Recorded video statement Thursday.
“These accusations are baseless, and the President’s public statements make it clear that his sole goal is political revenge at any cost. The President’s actions constitute a serious violation of our constitutional order and have drawn sharp criticism from members of both parties.”
Halligan was appointed to this position last month after Donald Trump became frustrated with the pace of investigations against his rivals. “No one is above the law,” Halligan said in a statement.
“The charges alleged in this case represent intentional criminal acts and egregious violations of the public trust. The facts and law in this case are clear, and we will continue to pursue them to ensure justice.”
