The Kremlin has proposed that Russia and the United States build a “Putin-Trump” railway tunnel under the Bering Strait to connect the two countries, according to a proposal from one of President Vladimir Putin’s top investment officials.

Reuters reported that Kirill Dmitriev, Putin’s investment envoy and head of the Russian Direct Investment Fund, floated the idea on Thursday.

The plan calls for a 70-mile rail and freight tunnel to be built by Elon Musk’s Boring Company within eight years at an expected cost of $8 billion. Dmitriev said the project will be financed by Moscow and “international partners.”

“The dream of a connection between the United States and Russia across the Bering Strait reflects an enduring vision — from the 1904 Siberian-Alaska railway to Russia’s 2007 plan,” Dmitriev wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter. “The Russian Investment Fund has studied existing proposals, including a railway between the United States, Canada, Russia and China, and will support the most viable proposals.”

The proposal came after former President Donald Trump spoke by phone with Putin and agreed to meet in Budapest to discuss ways to end the war in Ukraine.

The Bering Strait separates Russia from Alaska. Reuters reported that the small Diomede Islands – one controlled by Russia and the other controlled by the United States – are located in the middle of the strait, separated by a distance of 2.4 miles.

Dmitriev suggested that The Boring Company be the construction company, pointing to its tunneling technology as a way to significantly reduce costs.

“Imagine connecting the United States and Russia – the Americas and Afro-Eurasia – with the Putin-Trump tunnel, a 70-mile link that symbolizes unity,” Dmitriev wrote in a post addressed to Musk. “Traditional costs are more than $65 billion, but @boringcompany’s technology can bring them down to less than $8 billion. Let’s build a future together.”
