Merry Christmas! Here’s an early treat: Writer-director Thomas Bezucha is working on a sequel to the 2005 holiday classic Family stone. The original film centers on matriarch Sybil Stone, played by Diane Keaton, who brings her chaotic family together one last Christmas after being re-diagnosed with breast cancer. At the end of the film, the family reunites the following year in her memory. And now Bezucha is doing the same, honoring Keaton after her death on October 11, even though he was planning to write a second film anyway. “The loss of Sybil haunted me for months while I was working on it, so this was a bit of a bruise really,” Bezucha said. CNN. “Mentally, I was spending time in that house as I had been missing her for a while already.” Now he says he wants to “honor her even more” by doing “right by the rest of the cast” with a new script made after Sybil’s death.

Nothing beyond a potential script has been confirmed yet, but before he started writing, Bezucha asked his producer to reach out to the cast of the film’s original cast because “I’m not interested in a Brady family reunion without the original Jean,” he told CNN. Apparently, there was unanimous excitement for the sequel. Possible returnees include Craig T. Nelson as the Stone Patriarch. Rachel McAdams and Elizabeth Reaser as the Stone Sisters; Dermot Mulroney, Luke Wilson, and Tyrone Giordano as the Stone Brothers. They are joined in the first film by Claire Danes and Sarah Jessica Parker as the sisters who are also love interests for the Mulroney brothers and Wilson, and Brian J. White as the deaf love interest, the gay brother Giordano. The original film is currently available to stream on Disney+ – there’s never been a better time to leave the family stoned.
