Purdue vs. Texas Tech: Need to know

Offensive fireworks: Purdue has the No. 1 offense in adjusted efficiency metrics at Kenboom.com This season, while Texas Tech — No. 12 in adjusted efficiency — is not down, per se, in that regard. This combination combined with the inconsistent early defensive sequences of both teams could give us a penalty shootout. Vegas seems to think this might be the case as well: the over/under for the game is 153.5.

stars in abundance: Texas Tech forward JT Toppin, the Big 12 Player of the Year, leads all Big 12 players this season in rebounds per game (10.0) and is averaging 23.5 points per game to boot. Purdue guard Braden Smith is averaging 9.0 assists per game — second in college basketball — while teammate Trey Kaufman-Renne is averaging 16.0 points and 13.7 boards per game. There’s enough star power here to give us a great night. Good opportunity there at least Three All-Americans – and maybe more! -You’re going to work tonight.

3 point power: Texas Tech’s scoring this season has been greatly enhanced by relying on its three-point shot. Of all the points scored, 41.2% of its offense can be attributed to 3-pointers, according to KenPom data — which ranks 23rd in college basketball. That strength could match up well with a Purdue team that ranks 147th in 3-point percentage allowed this season. Tech’s tendency to fill a void of depth and to do so at a consistently high level will be among the larger storylines that determine the outcome.

Purdue vs. Texas Tech predictions, pick

Possibilities across Caesars Sports Book

Texas Tech keeps this game close but Purdue pulls a close one. This is my official prediction. Tech has the size, skill and athleticism to match the Boilermakers, and their offense could be good enough to not only keep them close, but pull off an upset. I think the play here for me will be to take the points over the underdog in what on paper is a pretty even game. Pick: Texas Tech +3.5
