Call to check YouTube ads such as regular TV to stop fraud
LIB Dems said that YouTube ads should be examined like those on traditional TV to protect users from content such as fraud, promoting diet pills and supporting fake celebrities.
The party wants to examine more YouTube ads for the potential harmful content before it appears on the statute and media systems to issue fines.
Last week, the annual report of the OFcom found that YouTube had exceeded ITV to become the second most watched media service behind the BBC.
Google, who owns YouTube, said she is striving to support “an ecosystem worthy and transparent ecosystems for users.”
Currently, most ads are treated on television and radio by Clearcast and Radio Center before broadcasting, and this is not the case for those who appear on YouTube.
Liberal Democrats argue that this means that “irresponsible online ads can often multiply before any intervention to review or download it.”
“It is clear that it is not now right that a more monitored platform than any traditional broadcaster is still working under the” lighter “declaration system,” said Max Wilkenson, a member of the cultural spokesman for the liberal Democrats.
“The regulations need to catch the truth of how people see the content and inevitable advertisers should not be allowed to use gaps to exploit people.”
“We cannot allow a two -level system where traditional broadcasters face a strong scrutiny, while a digital giant such as YouTube is allowed to celebrate its homework.
“It is time for the regulator to treat YouTube ads such as TV and radio ads, to protect consumers in the UK from misleading or harmful content. The government needs to act now.”
The ASA standards monitors TV and radio advertisements and online care and deals with complaints after broadcasting.
“The fraud ads highlighted by liberal Democrats are fraudulent and they are dealing with them in Offcom under the online safety law, which was designed to hold the platforms accountable to address and defraud their services,” said ASA spokesman.
“We easily support Offcom to implement this work and we will continue to play and play a role in reporting them and working with platforms to remove them.”
Earlier this year, ASA said that in 2024 it received 1,691 reports on possible online fraud ads, 177 of which were marked into online platforms.
She said that the largest fraud trend included the use of artificial intelligence to create Deepfake videos for celebrities, politicians or members of the royal family who support their products.
The announcement of one fraud was sent to ASA, which depicts King Charles recommending the investment of the cryptocurrency.
YouTube users can report ads that they believe violate Google’s ads policies. Policies include a ban on promotion of fake goods and dangerous products such as recreational medications and piracy programs.
Some announcement of encrypted currency services allows, but he says that promoter must comply with the local laws of the country that is targeted.
According to Google, she removed 411.7 million ads in the United Kingdom in 2024 and suspended 1.1 million accounts.
Under the online safety law, online services have to assess the risk of users being harmed by illegal content – including consideration of fraud risk.
The law also gives the Offes authorities to oversee how to protect user services from processing fraudulent ads.
The Supervisory Authority said that it is consulting with a code of fraudulent advertising practices, which will be implemented once approved by Parliament.
