Ice Head defends arrests – and dealing with Abyerigo Garcia
The Agency in the United States of Migration and Customs, the agency known as ICE, lies at the heart of President Donald Trump’s campaign to address crime and illegal immigration, as it continues to test the borders of the executive authority.
The man at the head of the agency is Todd Leon, the Acting Director. In this role, more than 20,000 employees are supervised, and many of them were accused of overseeing criminal investigations and enforcing immigration laws. In an interview with The Monitor on Tuesday, the recent news events and the agency’s goals, along with the increasing legal and humanitarian interests, discussed the ICE tactics. He also said that sending more immigrants to the notorious Salvadori prison “may be a possibility.”
This is the place where the administration was sent Kilmar Abrago Garcia, which the government was mistakenly deported to El Salvador in March. After Mr. Abrego Garcia was recently released from the criminal custody associated with human smuggling charges, Ice, Mr. Abrego Garcia, has been in charge of Maryland this week and seeks to deport it again. The federal boycott judge temporarily prevented his removal so that it can hold a session to confirm whether the government is following the law.
Why did we write this
The Immigration and Customs application in the United States got a $ 75 billion batch of Congress and plays a major role in the campaign to deport President Donald Trump. The screen conducted an interview with the Acting Director Todd Leon about the current role of the agency and criticism he faces.
Mr. Lyon also talked about the new cooperation between ICE and the Metropolitan Police Administration in Washington, DC, at the same time as the increase in the controversy of Mr. Trump to the National Guard forces increased to the country’s capital.
The amount of ice in the goal of the administration was not a million annual deportations. The agency has not published monthly removal data yet, although Mr. Lyon says the numbers are coming. As of the first 100 days of management, ice He said He removed 65682 non -citizens. The end of the fiscal year, President Joe Biden supervised 271,484 ice removal.
While the historical flow of financing puts Ice “for success”, the agency’s head said, he sees legal challenges on a continuous obstacle. The interview was gently released for clarity and length.
Director Leon, I was in Ice nearly two decades ago. How important is the public’s confidence in the ICE mission?
The key should be. I really think, what we want people to understand is the actual true task of what Ice does. Often, even under previous administrations, Ice has always been on a defense, but no one really looked at what the task of implementing the real public safety law in ICE. Sometimes I believe that this is preoccupied with political discourse – that the ice is accustomed to being a lot of political football, and it is not seen for the public safety value it takes to societies.
What can Ice do to gain more general confidence?
I think, frankly, the more transparency with those who move. Our public affairs here in the department, and our separation on social media, did a really great job in highlighting the worst people we follow. I only think the problem is often in the media. They do not focus on the good work we do.
Ice has its critics, those who are interested in hiding officers, arresting court, and breaking the car windows. Even if you do not agree with them, can you sympathize with their concerns about transparency, legal procedures, and aggression?
I can. But I believe that ICE will love to get more support from elected officials to hold these individuals threatening, dox, and offensive ice agents. Not only ICE agents – whether they are private agents or deportation officers – but any federal law enforcement employee. So they did not have masks, they had no hidden identity. Instead of a fiery speech or comments about the mission in ICE, we need the support that elected officials will hold accountable individual officials who want to put law enforcement officers in the way of harm.
There were serious allegations of attacks against ICE employees, including the Prairieland detention center in Texas, Which led to charges against 10 people. How did the attacks change Ice on Earth?
Especially in the judicial states in the resort, where we do not have the law enforcement agencies that cooperate with us, where we have to go out in societies and release these criminal foreigners who were released from topical custody, instead of sending four officers to the regular five to go to arrest in the street, we must now double the number, because the fishing teams are actually safe for them.
To address news about Kilmar Abrego Garcia, the Salvadori citizen was wrongly deported in March: Can you confirm his place now?
Yes, he is being held in Virginia.
Where in Virginia?
Farmville detention center.
And the government is still planning to deport it to Uganda?
Well, I will not go to its position, but the government is still planning to make this final arrangement for deportation. He has a legal order to deport from the immigration judge, from the Ministry of Justice. He has a blocking – he will not return to El Salvador – but we will return him to a third safe country. Therefore, when the temporary restriction order is raised by the judge, we will go ahead and affect this final arrangement of removal.
But you say that you cannot confirm that this will be for Uganda?
Yes, at this time, I will not confirm that.
In your opinion, do migrants must solve criminal legal cases against them here in the United States before deportation?
There are mechanisms in force for the local and state judicial states for the survival of these individuals, which remain in custody, to see the continuation or strengthening of their criminal cases. But when the local judicial authorities go and release them to society – and they have, in this case, a final arrangement of removal, a criminal foreigner and a gang member – ICE cannot put public safety at risk. We have to affect this arrangement.
What main meals do you want to leave with the American public about the government’s endeavor to deport Mr. Alago Garcia?
He was legally ordered to be deported by the immigration judge. We cannot ignore it. He is also a well -known member of the gang, and we cannot ignore it either. ICE mission is to remove criminal foreigners, and this is what we will do.
Of course, Mr. Alago Garcia and his legal team oppose the MS-13 affiliation, but I understand the government’s position on that. Since March, did Ice send any other immigrants to the terrorist imprisonment center in El Salvador? Are you all planning in the future?
We did not do that, but with regard to future plans … I cannot talk to what the future will be for that.
So, is it a possibility?
Yes, it can be a possibility.
Ice receives $ 45 billion for detention, approximately $ 30 billion for employment, training and other costs through the one beautiful bill. Are there any remaining barriers in front of ICE operations that this historic financing does not address?
We have been prepared for success, but what I would like to say is that there will always be a kind of barrier, whether legally, whether the court rulings are like that. But we are ready in our working strength, employees, and our resources to ensure the achievement of the minister’s goals and ensure that we meet the administration of President Trump and his vision of the ice and what he wants for public safety, and this is what we focus on.
In May, White House Adviser Stephen Miller He said The administration was “looking to determine” the goal of the minimum of 3000 daily arrests. Then in LiftAnd the Ministry of Justice said last month that “no goal has been determined as a political issue.” To record the record straight: Does ICE have the goal of arresting 3000 immigrants per day?
no. We are not working on shares. We never had. We cannot do the law in this way. Especially when you focus on the worst worst. As you know, any type of leader, any type of executive authority, will set goals for their people, but there is no mandate we put.
The administration continues to distribute its detention to the “worst of the worst” through the social media accounts of the ice and the Ministry of Internal Security. But then the Americans see arrests Cyclines in Washington, DC. What is important for Americans to understand how to give priority to “worse than the worst” with everyone illegally dealing here as a fair game of arrest?
I always give an example of the city enforcement environment in the city. In stopping traffic, the driver is required. They arrest the driver, but they determine the passenger in the car. Although this passenger may have just a civilian or a violation of civil tickets, the local police department will not turn a blind eye. And so is the ice. If we are working with our partners and facing someone here illegally, we will take action.
Specifically, how do these operations take place in Washington, DC? Do you have ice staff riding in the same vehicles with the police station?
We have private agents and deportation employees with all the partners who are working here on the Make DC Safe initiative again.
As in the same vehicles, ride along?
In some cases. In some cases, just work together, jointly in the work teams.
How many arrests in the capital have made by ice since August 11?
From today [Aug. 26]478.
What is in the first place those arrests that depend on it?
Therefore, I would like to say that the majority of them were in our work with our federal partners, and that they were people who were looking for, who were released before the reservation.
What is the Ice’s Endgame? At the end of President Trump’s second term, how will the agency’s success be measured?
You know something, really lost in a lot of what we do is the fact that many of these criminal foreigners prey on … other illegal immigrants who came here for a better life. You have a lot of people who escape crime and persecution from other countries.
We want to ensure the support of the ICE public safety mission, which is seen as a dedicated law enforcement agency that makes a difference in societies. This is the way I admit.
