Bills’ Josh Allen passes Cam Newton to set NFL record for most games with passing yards and rushing touchdowns

Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen NFL history was made on Sunday vs. Carolina Panthers. Finding the end zone three times en route to a big win, Allen made his 46th career game with a pass and a rushing touchdown. That surpassed the mark of 45 such games played by Cam Newton throughout his career, making Allen the player NFL New leader. Coincidentally, Allen broke the record against Newton’s old team.

The historic relegation came in dramatic fashion as well. Allen hit Khalil Shakir for an explosive 54-yard pass with 12:18 left in the third quarter, which at the time increased the Bills’ lead to 23 points. He notched his first takeaway score earlier in the game when he nailed the ball from long range late in the second quarter.

Later in the third quarter, Allen made more history by scoring his second goal of the afternoon. The rush into the end zone made him just the second quarterback in league history with 70 rushing touchdowns in his career.

Allen finished the day with a modest amount of receiving yards but was very effective in defeating the Panthers. He completed 12 of 19 passes for 163 yards and a big-play touchdown, and added three carries for seven yards and two scores.

Sunday’s standout performance is the latest in a string of performances by Allen to start the season. Buffalo’s star quarterback is in the midst of the NFL MVP race and, according to FanDuel, has the second-best odds of winning the award (+330), trailing only Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes (+140).

Despite a historic effort by their quarterback, the Bills got most of their offensive production from running back James Cook. The fourth-year standout set a new career high with 216 rushing yards, surpassing the 200-yard mark for the first time as a pro. He now has four games with at least 100 yards passing through seven games.
