First look photos from Jack Thorne’s film adaptation
The BBC and Stan have revealed the first images from their upcoming film about William Golding Lord of the Flies. Adapted by Jack Thorne (Adolescence(Directed by Mark Munden)National treasure), the four-part series is a first for television and was produced with the support of the Golding family. Check out the photos above and below.
The series is produced by Eleven (Sex education) for BBC iPlayer and BBC One, in a co-production with Stan, which will broadcast the drama in Australia. Sony Pictures Television will distribute internationally.
The new photos show the young actors, many of whom are making their professional acting careers for the first time, filming on location in Malaysia. Winston Sawyers stars as Ralph, Lux Pratt as Jack, David McKenna as Piggy, and Ike Talbot as Simon. Thomas Connor appears as Roger and Noah, Cassius Fleming as twins Sam and Eric, Cornelius Brandreth as Maurice and Tom Page Turner as Bill – along with a cast of more than 30 boys playing ‘biguns’ and ‘littluns’ at the desert island camp.
A classic tale first published in 1954, Lord of the Flies It is the story of a group of young schoolchildren who find themselves stranded on a tropical island after a fatal plane crash. In an attempt to remain civilized, the boys organize themselves, led by Ralph and supported by the group’s intellectual, Piggy. But Jack, in charge of the shooting mission, is more interested in hunting and vying for leadership and soon begins to push the other boys down the order of the group and, ultimately, from hope to tragedy.
Thorne’s adaptation is described as being faithful to the original novel – set in the early 1950s on an unnamed island in the Pacific Ocean – and will delve deeper into the book’s emotional themes; Human nature, loss of innocence and childhood masculinity.
Each episode is titled with a character at the heart of the story – Ralph, Piggy, Simon and Jack.
The Eleven and One Shoe Films production is supported by Sony Pictures Television for BBC iPlayer, BBC One and Stan. Produced by Callum Deverell Cameron (Sex education). Executive producers are Joel Wilson and Jamie Campbell for Eleven, Thorne for One Shoe Films, Munden and Naufal Faizullah for BBC, and Kayla Scobie for Stan.
