Guillermo del Toro would ‘rather die’ than use artificial intelligence
As the conversation around artificial intelligence continues to intensify in Hollywood, Guillermo del Toro is beginning to push back against the filmmaking fad.
The 8x Oscar winner recently said he would “rather die” than use generative AI in his films, comparing the technology to the “arrogance” of the mad scientist played by Oscar Isaac in his Netflix adaptation of Mary Shelley’s novel. Frankenstein.
“AI, especially generative AI — I’m not interested, and I never will be interested,” he said in an interview. NPR. “I’m 61, and I hope I’m still not interested in using it at all until I get upset…. A few days ago, someone wrote me an email, saying, ‘What’s your position on artificial intelligence?’ And my answer was very brief. I said, ‘I’d rather die.'”
Del Toro explained that “what matters to him is not artificial intelligence, but natural stupidity,” adding: “I think that is what drives most of the worst features in the world.”
the Frankenstein The writer/director noted that he linked his adaptation of the eponymous role “in some ways to his tech bros. It’s kind of blind, creating something without considering the consequences and I think we have to pause and think about where we’re going.”
