Rian Johnson has revealed that he plans to take a break Knives outbut remains “active” about returning to the Netflix murder mystery franchise in the future.

Speaking at Deadline’s Contenders London on Saturday, Johnson said he is working on an original script that will take him away from the world of Detective Benoit Blanc, played by Daniel Craig.

He appeared on stage alongside actor Josh O’Connor and producer Ram Bergman to promote Dead Man’s Wake: A Knives Mysterythe third installment in the series.

“I’m writing now, [but] It’s not one of these [Knives Out] films. “It’s just something completely different, something original,” Johnson explained. “I actually feel very energetic after making this thing [Wake Up Dead Man]But that’s three in a row. “Maybe it’s healthy to see other people.”

Johnson did not reveal further details about his original project or whether it will be shown on Netflix. He signed a lucrative two-film deal with the broadcaster KTV Knives out franchise following the success of the original 2019 feature.

Johnson said during the Contenders London event The dead man woke up It is closer to an Agatha Christie mystery than the previous films.

“The reality of this film is almost like the structure of a traditional murder mystery,” he said. “That’s how most Agatha Christie books work, where in the first act you meet all the suspects, and you meet the protagonist, and he’s not the detective. Then the murder happens, and the detective shows up.”

Blanc faces a darker mystery than in the previous films, with religious intrigue centered around the protagonist, played by O’Connor, and with gothic elements inspired by the classic works of Edgar Allen Poe. O’Connor plays Jude Duplincity, a priest sent to a remote location in upstate New York, who becomes a sort of sidekick to Blanc in solving the mystery.

O’Connor told Contenders London that it was a pleasure working with Craig, revealing that the James Bond star is “very willing to give up his craft” as an actor. However, O’Connor joked that Craig has “idiot ball” qualities and is “incredibly cheeky” on set.
