MLB League Series: Takeaways, best moments from the Brewers’ Game 5 win

There’s nothing better than a Game 5 – especially between top-tier rivals.

After several slugfests in the previous games of this series, the rubber matchup between the Milwaukee Brewers and Chicago Cubs was a battle of relievers, with four solo home runs the only offense.

The Brewers’ three outs were enough, giving them a chance to win the first National League Championship Series in their history. (They won the AL pennant in 1982.) Milwaukee, which has the best record in the NFL and MLB, will host the Los Angeles Dodgers in Game 1 of the NLCS at 8:08 PM ET on Monday.

We’ve covered the biggest moments from today’s match, as well as takeaways after the final.

The Brewers came out big on the mound to shut out the Cubs, who could only muster Seiya Suzuki’s solo home run in Game 5. It came in the first at-bat against Jakub Misiorowski, who entered to start the second inning — but it was no harbinger of what was to come. In a key stretch of the game, the young rookie settled in nicely: he pitched four solid innings, giving up just that one run without a walk. In fact, manager Pat Murphy almost left himself open to second-guessing when he pulled Misiorowski in favor of lefty Aaron Ashby. Ashby gave up a hit and then struck out to start the sixth, but then Kyle Tucker struck out, Suzuki flied out and Ian Happ struck out the third to end the threat. In the end, William Contreras, Andrew Vaughn and Bryce Turang’s solo home run held off Milwaukee to clinch an NLCS berth. The Brewers were the best team in the National League in the regular season, and with their season on the line, they fielded their usual crew of unsung heroes. In a way, this was the perfect Brewers game: Pat Murphy fielded five different pitchers, including an opener in Trevor Miguel (who had been the team’s closer until he went down with an injury in August); rookie flamethrower Jakub Misiorowski, who pitched four innings of one-run ball; former prospect Aaron Ashby, who got a big hit on Kyle Tucker with two runners; Another starter in Chad Patrick, acquired from the A’s in 2023; Then Abner Uribe, who pitched the final two innings.

Offensively, the Brewers don’t always rely on home runs, but like any other team, they win far more games when they hit home runs. The three who hit in this game came from William Contreras, Andrew Vaughn, and Brice Turang – two trade acquisitions (Vaughn came over earlier this season after the White Sox essentially dumped him) and a Gold Glove second baseman who has added power to his game this year. The Brewers can beat you in different ways, and their bullpen depth and pitching versatility will make them a threat against the Dodgers. If the Force emerges, they will have a chance to reach their first World Series since 1982. — David Schoenfeld
