Moby hires veteran publicist VJ Carbone in the US
As the company gears up for a busy awards season, Mubi has appointed veteran advertising executive VJ Carbone to the position of Vice President of US Communications.
In his role at Mubi, Carbone will oversee publicity for the company’s US film campaigns and expand its presence in the US. He will be based in the New York office and report to Sophie Rattigan, Senior Vice President of Global Communications at Mubi.
Moby recently released Lynne Ramsay’s psychological thriller Die My Love starring Jennifer Lawrence, and her electric performance opposite Robert Pattinson received critical acclaim. The film had its world premiere in competition at the Cannes Film Festival, has continued to screen at festivals around the world, and is now being touted by MOBI as a strong contender in the awards race, especially for the Best Actress category. Earlier this month, Mubi received nine Gotham Award nominations, and 24 BIFA nominations (with Akinola Davis Jr.’s “My Father’s Shadow,” a Mubi release, emerging as the front-runner). The company is also behind the four films that top the European Film Awards nominations: Emotional Value by Joachim Trier, Sirat by Oliver Lax, The Sound of Falling by Masha Shilinsky, and It Was Just an Accident by Jaafar Panahi.
“We are thrilled to welcome VJ to Mobi,” Rattigan said. “His experience, reputation and passion for film make him an excellent addition to our team at a time when supporting strong independent storytelling is more important than ever,” the executive continued.
Carbone, who was most recently a consultant at Amazon MGM Studios where he led campaigns for “Bones and All,” “Challengers” and “Boys in the Boat,” said he is “honored to join the amazing Mubi team.”
He continued: “I have dedicated my career to supporting great films and filmmakers, and I am excited to bring my experience to the work ahead and to help amplify the voices, projects and vision that make Mobi so special.”
Prior to Amazon MGM Studios, Carbone spent 14 years at Focus Features, where he worked on titles such as “Brokeback Mountain,” “The Constant Gardener,” “Atonement,” “Somewhere,” “Moonrise Kingdom” and “Downtown Abbey.” He is the co-founder of the Asbury Park Film Initiative, a film-based non-profit organization that works to promote culture, education, and diversity.
Moby’s U.S. theatrical releases this year include Paolo Sorrentino’s “La Grazia” starring Tony Servillo, which won the Coppa Volpi for Best Actor in Venice, and Jim Jarmusch’s “Father Mother Sister Brother,” which won the Golden Lion in Venice.
