New faces, the same high risks: Brady Quinn inspecting confrontation of Texas Ohio

Michael Cohen

College Football and College Basketball Writer

Come Saturday morning, as college football fans across the country crawl out of bed to embark on the excitement of Week 1, millions of television sets and smartphones will be focused on the spectacle in Columbus, Ohio, where the defending national champions prepare to host Texas in a rematch of last year’s College Football Playoff semifinal.

Ranked No. 1 in the country, the Longhorns bring with them a famous quarterback in Arch Manning, presumed by many to be the Heisman Trophy favorite. And there to rebuff them will be a collection of Buckeyes ranked No. 3 in the preseason AP Poll, eager for the chance to build their own legacy after tasting glory in January.

To preview the game, we spoke with FOX Sports’ college football analyst Brady Quinn, who will be live on the set of “Big Noon Kickoff” at Ohio Stadium this weekend to document the action.

Here’s a Q&A between national college football writer Michael Cohen and Quinn:

Note: This interview was lightly edited for length and clarity.

Cohen: What are you most interested to see from Ohio State as the Buckeyes try to defend their national title?

Quinn: “It’s hard to answer that question because this team is so different from what they were last year, you know? Last year’s Ohio State team had closer ties to the Michigan team that won it two years prior because of all the guys that decided to stay and go back and try to have a chance of winning the national championship. So you look at the fact that they’ve got a new offensive coordinator, elevating Brian Hartline to that position. Matt Patricia comes in to take over as defensive coordinator. You have a new quarterback. I think if you went through the history of college football and teams that are trying to repeat, I don’t know if there’s any that have ever gone through this significant amount of changes and been able to [do it successfully].

“So I think this is the first thing that comes to mind is that this team is trying to create its legacy because no team in Ohio was able to repeat. But at the same time, they are also a completely different team – with the exception of two of the country’s best players in the country [wide receiver] Jeremiah Smith and [safety] Calip Downs, others are so clear. “

Cohen: Ohio has 14 players to the US Football Association’s draft. Texas was sent 12. But the big difference is what you just identified that Texas does not change any of the operating tools or coordinators, while Ohio is definitely. How important is this when there is a lot of rotation based on both sides, but one team will also have a lot of operating changes as well?

Queen: “It is a tremendous change. Its value cannot be reduced. Everything is how to call play and make sure that the first thing that matters is the lines of communication. This communication from the coach to the player and the ability to deal with that, and timing, there are some coordinators who get [play calls] In fast, there are others who love to wait, see and a kind of work around the clock. All this stops. So everyone has a different personality with how they deal with it.

“The personality of the coordinators themselves [will be different]. From an offensive point of view, you have some coordinators who look at the second and second, depending on their location in the field, and changes how they will call that play, do you know? If the second and the second are in excess, they take a bullet. If there is the second and the second and they were supported, they are not likely. It depends on the personality of this man.

“Defense Coordinator, for example, if you reach a large gain of 40 yards in Dowelfield, some coordinators then love the safe invitation in which they are almost a kind of climbing to safe coverage. You can get bracket coverage and different things, and how to hide it.

Cohen: What are some things that you will search for with the midfielder in Ohio Julian Seyen early in the Saturday match that will tell you either yes, he is ready for this moment, or not, may not be completely ready for this?

Queen: The simplest way is two things: Will it take what the defense gives? This will be shown in [whether] It forces football to Jeremiah Smith, especially if Texas did what they did in the semi -finals match [last year]Which played a lot of cloud coverage along with. They tried to place either nickel or the back corner on it safely at the top and try to disable its launch and try to remove it from the game’s plan mainly. if [Sayin] He tries to force the balls on Jeremiah Smith or to force the footballs out when there is nothing there instead of going to the middle, this is more than a weak place for Cover-2, which is a lot of what [defensive coordinator] Beit Qutukovsky did in the semi -final match. This is the first thing that is just making a decision and it takes what the defense offers to him.

Then the last thing is how to deal with the pressure, you know? [former Ohio State quarterback] Will Howard, who watched a lot of football, are they really mixed between the different ways they got covered with 2. They showed like a deep triple shell, and then they moved to what became basically like Tampa-2. They have moved some different players in Snap of the Football to reach Cover-2. or [Ohio State] The movement and transformation will, and [Texas] A man will run across [the formation]And, which is usually an indicator of a man to a man, and they played Cover-2 of it. So there are different things they did from the point of view of coverage to confuse it.

“It is the first start of Julian Sayyin. If you are a quinkovsky house, I will likely be more aggressive than I was in front of Will Howard, especially since Hauward was slightly more than hostility, you know? He says that Sayin is able to go out, but I am sure he wants to rotate football in this pocket, such a pocket, for example, in return to get out of these difficult and attempt cakes.”

Cohen: Can you describe the amount of development that will be different from Qurtbbeck sat down and waited for one year, as Sayin did, a quarter of a player sat and waited for two years, such as Arch Manning in Texas?

Queen: “You want to build these experiences. And when you are a young play like ARCH, although only a couple started, you can return to the Colorado state game. Do this. Because this is a different level. this The game, in my opinion it is really big. “

Cohen: Both offensive lines will be many new beginners. From the point of view of Qurtubbere, what is like watching an offensive line trying to work in an actual time when they are their first start together?

Queen: “Some people say they are four or five beginners in Ohio, but they are not. They go to the transfer gate for the correct treatment, but the other four men started games and played big footage last year. I think it is not great [for the Buckeyes] As for Texas, Longhorns has one beginning and the rest will be a much less experienced men. I think Texas has their work more. But one of the reasons why you usually see low registration games, especially among the really good teams to start seasons, is that there is a lot of communication-verbal and non-verbal-which continues between these five players in the foreground. And again, there is no pre -season. Yes, you are doing live actors [in practice]But not as in the game. All this is a really large piece if this medium will be protected, the extent of their activities in playing football, etc.

“It is clear that for Texas, more than Ohio, how do they deal with noise, as you know? The piece of communication is huge for all these new beginners who will get it. [defensive] In the forefront and stand against 100,000 fans screaming their heads to start one season, and to understand the repercussions of this game. “

Cohen: Are there a player or two players that may not be mentioned in the five or six -six names that ordinary fans think, but you find interesting in particular on how this congruence developed?

Queen: “I would like to say that it is related to the positions, as you know, because I expect that the Kwaskovsky house will try to take away Jeremiah Smith again and forced Julian Sai to win it. [fellow wide receivers] Carnell Tate or Brandon Anas. So I think Max Klare, The Purdue Transfer Stide, is a man who plays a really important role. He is from a player. That is why in Ohio. But as the owner of a pass in the middle of the field, he will be huge, in my opinion.

“As much as Texas goes, it is D-Tackles. You have lost beginners there. But for the largest part, the midfielder and secondary team corpus, there are many players who return to Texas, and this is their strength. And there is that Texas is to complete in sin or cannot be able to stop those who extend between them against Ozo.

Cohen: The last question is the clear question. How do you see this game vibrating?

Queen: “I cannot answer this because we have to save it for the offer. I will say this: I think it will be a defensive battle. I think that all the conversation was about Qurtubbere and the skills players, as is always the case. Yes, there will be a handful of plays that will determine the result, because I think this will be narrow. This will be a defensive battle more than anything else.

“I will be curious to see all things in the first game you are looking for: the safety of the ball, prenatal penalties, or missed tasks, is narrow coverage, is that everyone is at a point. These are the things that, it is clear that you hope that both teams will play a clean game so that we can see some good football.”
