Critics blasted former President Barack Obama after he headlined a rally in Hampton Roads, Virginia, for Democratic gubernatorial candidate Abigail Spanberger and the statewide Democratic ticket that included a somewhat surprise appearance by scandal-plagued attorney general candidate Jay Jones.
Jones, who conceived the killing of former House Speaker Todd Gilbert and his children — and also faces an ongoing criminal investigation over a 116 mph reckless driving charge — avoided mentioning those scandals and instead criticized President Donald Trump during his remarks.
The appearance linked Obama and Spanberger to Jones — a move that critics said undermined the former president’s previous calls for civility and his 2024 comments urging Black voters to support Vice President Kamala Harris.
“They’re in favor of killing us,” Florida political journalist Eric Dougherty said of Obama’s appearance with Jones.

“In a disgusting scene, Virginia gubernatorial candidate Jay Jones — who has called for the killing of Republicans and their children — was cheered at a rally for Barack Hussein Obama with gubernatorial candidate Abigail Spanberger,” Dougherty said.
Obama did not mention Jones by name, Fox News’ Steve Doocy reported Monday, before Republican Winsome Earle Sears herself asked about the scene.
“I’m from a country where I’ve seen political violence, where I’ve seen political gangs shooting people and shooting each other when I was 10 years old,” said Earl Sears, who was born in Kingston, Jamaica.

“And to think that this is what I see in America today is absolutely crazy. And for my opponent, Abigail Spanberger, to not tell her candidate for attorney general… Jay Jones, out of the race because he shot two bullets in the head of his political opponents and also killed the man’s two- and five-year-old children, that can’t be where we are now.” In Virginia“.
In an appearance with Earl Sears in Purcellville, Loudoun County, Youngkin called Obama and Spanberger’s appearance with Jones “a wonderful representation of the far left’s embrace of violence.”
“I can’t believe Jay Jones was there, but Abigail Spanberger was with him, and Barack Obama was with him,” Youngkin said.

The outgoing governor called Jones “crazy” and wrote that any shred of moral clarity remaining in the Democratic Party “has been exposed.”
“Virginians saw that clearly [during the rally] That violence and killing is okay with them. “These may be their values, but they are not Virginia’s values.”

Conservative commentator Western Lensman described Obama’s statements during the rally as blatantly hypocritical.
Obama told the crowd that Spanberger knows that people should be “able to disagree without calling each other bad names or demonizing each other.”
An attorney general candidate who was present at the same rally described House Speaker Todd Gilbert, R-Shenandoah, as worse than dictators Pol Pot and Adolf Hitler — and expressed a desire to urinate on Gilbert’s grave.

Yes, Jay “I want to kill Republicans and their kids.” Jones shared this particular platform with Obama because he was invited to do so [and] “He remains a credentialed member of the Democratic ticket,” Fox News contributor Jay Benson added in response to Linsman.
“Obama doesn’t even believe his noble bulls, but that’s his automatic fault,” Benson added.
Another X commenter pointed out that comedian Roseanne Barr was fired from her ABC sitcom after calling Obama’s close friend Valerie Jarrett a cross between the Muslim Brotherhood and “Planet of the Apes” — but Democrats remain steadfast in their support for someone like Jones.
Critics also focused on Obama’s apparent change in position on black candidates running for president.

Former AFP Vice President Phil Kerpen joked: “Obama met with the psychopath Jay Jones today.”
Jones was also defended again by Virginia House Speaker Don Scott Jr., D-Portsmouth, who was interviewed by former NBC anchor Chuck Todd.
Scott told Todd that if Jones wins, he believes Virginia will “let him do his job and move on,” calling him “a good young man who made a terrible mistake.”
Scott previously told reporters after Spanberger’s debate with Earl Sears that people concerned about Jones should instead look to Trump’s comments about former Rep. Liz Cheney, R-Wyo.
Trump had claimed that Cheney’s neoconservative and interventionist political leaning would be less evident if she were in the same “war zone” as American soldiers and had enemy guns pointed at her.
