Social security changes the trend after collective removal operations
The number of people who collect social security deficit subsidies decreased after a significant decrease last year.
Why do it matter
The advantages of complementary security income (SSI) are issued for the blind, disabled, and the elderly who do not have income or resources. About 7.4 million collected these benefits from May 2025.
Newsweek I called the Social Security Department to comment via e -mail outside regular working hours.
What do you know
Between May 2023 and 2024, the number of people who claim these benefits decreased by more than 100,000 in the area of the year.
Between February and May 2025, the number of people receiving the advantages of SSI remained relatively stable, with slight fluctuations only from month to month. In February, 7,283,533 SSI individuals collected. This number increased modestly in March to 7,284,527, before it increased again in April to 7294,562 – the highest monthly monthly in this period. However, in May, the number of beneficiaries decreased slightly to 7,281,384.
There are several reasons that the SSI payments may stop for a person.
“Exit from the SSI program due to death, medical recovery, excessive income (acquired or unprecedented), extra resources or changing living arrangements,” SSA said in a report on disabilities trends. “Payments may be suspended because the recipient has extra profits, extra income, unprecedented, extra resources, or change in living arrangements.”

What countries have most of SSI beneficiaries?
Since last year, the country that has the largest number of recipients of the State Security Investigation in California still lives, with only one million – 987881 – for. In the second it is Texas, with about 422,000 claims; Then New York, with 418,000.
On the other side, Wyoming has the smallest number of people demanding the advantages of the State Security Investigations, with only 4,900 claims. North Dakota and Alaska have small sums of all – 5,790 and 7,506, respectively.
SSI increase for 2026?
The Living cost modification (Cola), which was implemented in 1975, is an essential element in social security, which helps maintain the purchase strength of the benefits by keeping up with inflation.
Looking at 2026, independent estimates from social security policy analyst Mary Johnson and the elderly in the Citizen Association indicate that there is 2.5 percent of Cola – where the increase in the year 2025 was determined.
The Social Security Administration is expected to announce in 2026 in October.
Next social security changes
Almost 500,000 of the beneficiaries of social security and SSI beneficiaries to receive their payments through a paper check, but this is expected to change in the near future.
Under an executive order signed by President Donald Trump in March – I specify “Update payments to and from the American Banking Account” – all federal expenses, including social security, SSI, SSDI, sellers payments, and tax recovery, must start electronically after September 30, 2025.
Social Security Administration says 493,775 payments are still issued through a material examination this month in all US states and regions, which represents 8.7 percent of the total interest in the interest.
