Sources: The Larry O’Brien Trophy logo returns to the NBA Finals court
By popular demand, the NBA Finals will return a large Larry O’Brien Championship Trophy logo to center court as well as a Finals script logo on the floor, sources told ESPN’s Shams Charania on Wednesday.
Sources told ESPN that the logos will be painted on the field rather than appearing digitally or via a poster.
Fans complained on social media during and after Game 1 of the last Finals between Oklahoma City and Indiana when they saw there were no Finals logo stickers on the field.
NBA Commissioner Adam Silver noted the discussions during the Finals and said the league would consider the possibility of bringing back iconic logos that have only appeared on the NBA’s biggest stage.
“I’ve seen some chatter on social media about the posters on the court,” Silver said on ESPN during the Finals. “People don’t realize they left a decade ago because there are allegations that some players made it [were saying] “They were slippery when we had the decals on the ground.”
The last time the large trophy was painted on the court for the NBA Finals was in 2009.
“Maybe there’s a way around that,” Silver told reporters during the finals. “To be honest, I didn’t even think much about it [saw] He – she [on social media].
“I’m also nostalgic for certain things. Also, I think for a media-driven culture, whether people are watching live or seeing those pictures on social media, it’s nice to look back at the highlights and it stands out because you see the cup logo or some other indicator that it’s a special event.”
