The Shawl Thing: The Sudden Rise in Small Scarves | fashion

ShIn the fashion world, miniature items are usually known for their attractiveness rather than their practicality. Think of a bag that is too small to hold more than a bank card. But now, the small knit scarf has emerged as a silly but practical must-have.

Triangle, one of the best-selling patterns on PetiteKnit, the website of Danish knitwear designer Mette Wendelboe Okkels, is dedicated to scarf It measures only 80cm x 13cm and covers only a small portion of the neck glands. Just like last year’s trend of wearing a piece of red, which was perhaps achieved with the ubiquitous red sock, the triangular square adds a knowing touch to the look. And while the trend may have Scandinavian roots (the Copenhagen streetwear group started wearing it during Fashion Week in September), it’s now being championed by a number of independent Scottish knitwear brands. Kiltani Their cashmere mini neckties are made in Edinburgh, &Daughter makes their basic colored mini hats in Hawick, while Johnstons of Elgin’s sheer triangle ties are made in their textile mill in Elgin, on the south Moray coast. elsewhere, Rove Knitwear Polka Dot Editions Designed in Margate and sewn in Manchester Cotswold Necktie Notgrovewhich features useful pull-on design details, and is sewn in Leicestershire. Of course, TikTok, home of the trend, has had its impact, with users offering clues on different ways to tie a small scarf – you’d be surprised at how many ways there are to wear a small wool triangle – including everything from Boy Scout knots to bite-sized masks and neckerchiefs. But compared to last year’s trend of repurposing jackets into scarves and complex tying techniques, the mini styles are more like scarves themselves: child’s play.
