newYou can now listen to Fox News articles!
Most people don’t realize that their smart TV has microphones that can pick up sound even when voice commands are turned off. These tiny microphones power voice search and assistants, but they also pose privacy risks. If that makes you uncomfortable, you’re not alone. The good news is that it only takes a few minutes to disable your smart TV’s microphone and protect your conversations.

Your phone is tracking you even when you think it isn’t
Step 1: Find the built-in microphone switch
Before opening the menus, check the frame of your TV. Many models feature a small hardware switch that turns off the microphone completely.
Look closely at the bottom or sides of the screen. Some switches are marked “built-in MIC”. On Samsung TVs, it’s often near the bottom right edge when facing the screen.

Slide the switch to “Off”. Your TV may confirm the change with an on-screen message. This is the most reliable way to turn off the microphone because it physically cuts off power to it.
Step 2: Disable your smart TV’s microphone in Settings
If your TV lacks a physical switch, go to its settings menu. While the exact names vary by brand, most follow a similar pattern.
He presses house or Settings on your remote control. Find the main sections like system, general or privacy. Inside you will find a mark on the microphone or audio options Voice recognition, Voice assistant or Microphone access.

Examples:
- Samsung: General → Voice
- Sony: Privacy → Google Assistant
- LG: User Agreements → Sound Settings
Turn off every feature that uses your microphone. Some options may appear in more than one place, so examine each section carefully.

Step Three: Striking a balance between comfort and privacy
Turning off your TV’s microphone doesn’t mean you lose smart features. Many remote controls include a push-to-talk button that activates voice control only when pressed.
If you rarely talk into your TV, it makes sense to keep the microphone off. If you like using voice commands, enable them temporarily when you need them.
Step 4: Check connected devices and apps
Even after you disable your smart TV’s microphone, audio-enabled apps and associated devices may still listen.
Check for any connected smart assistants like Alexa, Google Assistant, or Bixby. These platforms can continue to capture audio through your phone, smart speaker, or other device on the same network.

Take a minute to review the privacy settings in those apps as well. Turning off audio activity tracking across all your devices ensures you’re not listening to anything in your home when you don’t want to.
Why do smart TVs have microphones at all?
Manufacturers include microphones to make TVs more interactive. You can ask for weather updates, control the volume, or search for movies with your voice. It’s a convenient process, but it comes with trade-offs.
Some companies state in their privacy policies that voice data can be shared with third parties for analysis. This means your living room gossip can leave your home.
When you disable your Smart TV’s microphone, you maintain the benefits of a modern TV while limiting unwanted data collection.
What does this mean for you?
By taking a few minutes to change a single setting or press a single switch, you can control what your TV hears. It’s an easy way to improve your digital privacy without losing the entertainment experience you love.
You still get streaming apps, vibrant screens, and fast connectivity, with more peace of mind.
