The smooth sound barrier greatly cuts the traffic noise

If you live near a crowded street, this new penetration from Switzerland may offer some long -awaited relief. Researchers in the Swiss federal laboratories of material science and technology (EMPA) have developed the absorption of high traffic noise that greatly reduces vocal levels with the occupation of a small part of the area required by traditional materials.

The thickness of the new absorption is only about 2.1 inches, however it works equally with many larger products, such as rock wool. The most impressive thing, it can be dedicated to targeting specific types of noise, which makes them ideal for a variety of internal and external settings.

How new materials work

Innovation lies in the composition of the material: multi -layer metal foam made of gypsum or cement. Each layer has pores of different sizes, designed to force the air molecules to travel in longer and taller tracks. This extended journey helps to waste sound waves more efficiently than flat or uniform insulation.

EMPA researchers also use numerical modeling to simulate how the sound moves across the material. By setting pore sizes, hole patterns, and layer thickness, they can adjust the audio performance of a specific area or a type of noise. This type of control makes absorption suitable for sites ranging from calm stairs to loud offices.

The real world test in Zurich

To test the material in preparing the real world, the EMPA team installed an initial model in a corridor in Zurich. It covered about 130 square feet of the wall area with panels just over 2 inches. One of the ends of the corridor opens on a crowded street, while the other leads to a quieter yard.

The results were immediate and measurable. Traffic noise decreased by 4 dB. The sound reduction was more clear when cars entered or got out of the corridor, because the paintings caused the reflux of noise several times before reaching the courtyard. For the context, the reduction of 4 dB is enough to reduce the irritation caused by street noise, especially in populated urban areas.

It is designed for flexibility, designer for the future

One of the best features of this audio absorption is the little of the space it requires. Traditional insulation materials tend to take valuable inch, which limits the location of their use. This delicate and dense material provides more freedom for architects, internal designers and developers to include noise protection in areas that concern every inch.

Packets can also withstand outdoor elements. They are weather resistant, fire -resistant, and made of recyclable materials, making it solid and environmentally responsible. Since they do not release harmful molecules, they are also safe for internal use in places such as schools, offices and residential buildings.

Hunting: still manual, now

While the design and performance are promising, the current production method is challenges. There is still a hole in the painting manually, which makes it take a long time and is difficult to expand its scope. However, EMPA is already working with the Swiss manufacturer De Cavis to simplify production and preparation for wider commercial use. Once automatically, this material can become a standard advantage in construction projects where the noise control and space efficiency are both top priorities.
