There is no 2025 purchase option here to influence you to stop shopping

“I think people are angry about their financial situation in general,” Soden says. “And every dollar you spend is a vote for what you believe in.” She adds that “everyone is tired of everything being expensive,” and that getting fed up with your shopping habits is one way to start the reset process.

As shopping becomes easier, the temptation for impulse buying increases. “In the past 25 years, it has become more than just a matter of self-discipline. You have been targeted based on your personal taste,” financial expert and author Terry Savage He tells luster.

It’s a bit ironic that creators are posting no-buy challenges on TikTok, as the app is a direct line to shopping and a window into new products and trends. Of course, being able to participate in such a challenge means that you have a certain level of financial privilege, as there are plenty of people who don’t have discretionary spending or disposable income to cut back.

There are also some easy pitfalls to avoid. Some experts warn that doing an extreme form of budgeting, such as not purchasing for an entire year, may actually lead to spending more in the future. Soden agrees that this type of wasteful spending is a potential danger. “You just have to be careful because during the shopping lockdown, you’re not just dreaming of when you can spend money again,” she says.

To combat this, Sowden intentionally creates practices for herself that she wants to use even when she’s not buying, like with the weekly allowance she implements and breaks down into categories. “This also prevents overeating afterwards,” she says.

Savage says luster A shorter period of time is “easier” to not buy into and can actually lead to more success. Like influencers, she recommends preparing a specific plan and making sure goals, benchmarks and a timeline are set at the beginning.

“Don’t set a goal you can’t control,” Savage says. She believes that successfully completing a shorter no-purchase period can be a step toward achieving additional financial goals. “The feeling of accomplishment is so overwhelming, it will likely lead to the question: ‘Can I do this for another three months?'” she explains.

Soden stresses the importance of a positive outlook for anyone looking to start by not buying. “If you’re already saying, ‘Oh, I don’t think I can impose a shopping ban,’ then you’re not prepared,” she says. “You have to go into the shopping ban like, ‘I’m going to kill him.’ I’m going to do something amazing. I’m going to knock it out of the park.”

With the launch of the No Buy 2025 campaign, Sudan subscriber With her followers, she shared the “first homemade meal of 2025,” a simple turkey sandwich. You might add some pesto another day when you feel like taking that extra step, but come January 1st, you think the dry sandwich has worked.
