US President Donald Trump told Fox News in an exclusive interview on Monday that he credits US strikes on key Iranian nuclear sites with making the peace deal between Israel and Hamas possible.

Trump made these comments to Fox News Channel in Israel after Hamas released the remaining 20 Israeli hostages from captivity in Gaza.

“I think it really started when we destroyed Iran’s nuclear capability,” Trump said, referring to the strikes on Iranian nuclear sites in June. “When you look at what they had, you can’t make that deal with someone sitting there holding a nuclear weapon over your head,” he added.

Trump emphasized that the Gaza agreement is just the beginning of what he hopes will become a broader movement toward peace throughout the Middle East, Yingst said.

The 20 living Israeli hostages were released as part of an agreement aimed at ending the conflict that began with the deadly attack by Hamas terrorists on October 7, 2023. Hamas terrorists killed more than 1,200 people and took about 240 hostage in southern Israel during the attack. Two years of fighting in Gaza followed, which killed tens of thousands.

In exchange for the release of the remaining living hostages, Israel began releasing about 2,000 Palestinian detainees, including about 250 identified as terrorists.
