Tube worms live beneath the planetary crust around deep-sea vents
HThermal vents They are planetary exhaust pipes. Kilometers below the ocean’s surface, it is relentlessly spewing hot water filled with harsh chemicals from beneath the Earth’s crust. When they were first discovered in 1977, no one expected these harsh sites to bear signs of life. However, thriving alongside these vents were colonies of tubeworms, mussels, and oysters, completely new to science. It is difficult to think of an environment that could be more hostile. However, new work now reveals evidence that these animals raised their young in such a place: broken rocks beneath the vents themselves.
