Trump reluctantly backs Cuomo for mayor of New York City
Donald Trump has reluctantly endorsed Andrew Cuomo’s bid for mayor of New York.
Cuomo, the former Democratic governor of New York and a longtime critic of Trump, is running as an independent candidate after losing the party’s primary to Zahran Mamdani, who would become the city’s first Muslim mayor and its youngest mayor in more than 100 years if he wins.
“If Communist candidate Zahran Mamdani wins the New York City mayoral election, it is highly unlikely that I will contribute federal funds, other than the minimum required, to my beloved first home,” Trump said in a post on Truth Social. “I don’t want, as president, to send good money after bad money.”
Trump’s comments echoed those aired Sunday during an appearance on CBS’ 60 Minutes, in which he said: “It’s going to be hard for me as president to give a lot of money to New York, because if you have a communist running New York, all you’re doing is wasting the money you’re sending there.”
Mamdani said that if Cuomo wins, he will be a “puppet” of Trump. He added: “I think what scares me at this moment is the possibility that Donald Trump’s puppet will become (the mayor).” He told NBC News.
Former US President Barack Obama has offered to serve as a “sounding sounder” for New York mayoral candidate Zahran Mamdani if his lead in the polls turns into a win, according to reports.
Obama also reportedly praised Mamdani’s campaign against his main independent challenger, former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, and Republican nominee Curtis Sliwa. The New York Times was the first to report this call, then Mamdani’s spokesman confirmed it to Reuters.
“Zahran Mamdani expressed his appreciation for President Obama’s words of support and their conversation about the importance of bringing a new kind of politics to our city,” said Mamdani’s spokeswoman, Dora Piekek.
Mamdani, a state Assemblyman, held a wide lead over Cuomo and Sliwa ahead of Tuesday’s general election. Latest Atlas survey estimated Mamdani (40%) was nearly six points ahead of Cuomo (34%) and 16 points ahead of Sliwa (24%).
Why might California redraw its congressional maps?

Chris Stein
Texas redrew it Maps favor Republicans at Trump’s request, and is one of several states the president has pushed to use partisan gerrymandering to help the GOP hold House seats in next year’s midterm elections.
For various reasons, only a handful of Democratic-led states can redraw their maps to offset expected Republican gains, with California offering the best chance.
Because the state has an independent redistricting commission, voters will be asked to approve Proposition 50, which would enact a new map that could allow Democrats to pick up five additional House seats.
With support from Gov. Gavin Newsom, polls show the proposal with a strong lead.
Why is Zahran Mamdani so important?

Chris Stein
New York City has perhaps the most famous mayor in the country, and in June, Mamdani, a 34-year-old state Assemblyman and Democratic Socialist, won the Democratic primary in an upset over former Gov. Andrew Cuomo.
