What’s up with TV announcers who add an accent when pronouncing Spanish names? – Troubled
We’ve all experienced the “bump in the road” during a television news program. This is where a broadcaster or reporter comes across a Spanish word or name and suddenly there are some very noticeable pronunciation movements.
Newsmax Rob Finnerty says it’s time to stop this ridiculous practice. (reads)
Newsmax host Rob Finnerty wonders why anchors pronounce Spanish-sounding names with an accent, and begins speaking in an Irish accent to prove how ridiculous it is.
“As I said before, I’m Irish. And if I were moderating this discussion, would the host introduce me as Robert James Finnerty? Don’t you know that little boy is Robert James Finnerty?”
“If the host is Chinese, are they going to introduce that person with a Chinese accent? I don’t think so. Stop it.”

Rob makes a good point…AOC did the same thing last night during her Communist Mamdani speech. She mentioned every nationality under the sun, and when she got to the word Latino, she said, “Latinooo.”
strange.

Unfortunately, this phenomenon extends beyond television news.
And politicians do it too. Here’s AOC doing exactly that as shown in the last poster. (He watches)

Oh my God, it’s terrible. It’s like watching the captain of the ninth grade cheerleading squad pretend she’s running for president.

Don’t give her that much credit.
Posters agree with Finnerty that the practice needs to end, and that no particular culture or language should be singled out for highlighting it.
Finally someone said it. This fake “accent empathy” stuff is the height of performative bullshit. Respect people by treating them as equals, not by representing their culture live. Common sense > theatricality. π

He’s got a point. Exaggerated accents or names can come across as forced rather than respectful.

There’s a line between respect and parody, and people keep crossing it

He made the announcers look like clowns auditioning for approval, and the audience unapologetically loved every second of it.

Many of them end up as clowns even if they don’t realize it.
Some commentators say they like to hear certain accents on broadcast just for a laugh, but not as an everyday thing.
cheerful! Can we please hear the Irish accents? I was actually watching a political debate for that. And throw in Italian too, just for kicks.

If he starts the morning broadcast by saying “Top o’ themornin’ to ya” and then someone breaks into the House of Pain.

Oh, sure, Rob!
It’s as if you’d expect me to suddenly start speaking in a perfect British accent just because I’m discussing something from the UK.
Greetings my friend, here is the latest weather news, right? No, I’ll look like a parrot trying to imitate a Cockney. π

I want him to use a Chinese accent next time.– Tony Moon (@RoofKorean7) October 28, 2025
Chinese? A lot of people will get in trouble if they try to do this on air or in front of an audience.
