The Seattle Mariners earned a bye to the ALDS round by virtue of finishing 90-72 this season, good enough for their first AL West title since 2001 and the second-best record among division winners. The Detroit Tigers had to have a bye for almost the entire season, but a 14-game blowout in the Central spot means they need to hit the road in the wild-card series as a No. 6 seed. It doesn’t matter — the Tigers downed the Guardians in three games to advance here.

Detroit AEC picked up an overtime win in Game 1, and Seattle needed late heroics to even extend the series with a Game 2 win.

The Tigers and Mariners have never been in the playoffs before, so it’s a new matchup. The Tigers have not won the World Series since 1984, while the Mariners are the only team in baseball never to have reached the World Series. 3 stories game

Tigers: The nature of the structure of the playoffs in MLB is that the bottom seed must win at least one game to advance. The Tigers did just that, and now with two home games in front of them, they have a chance to punch a ticket to the next round without returning to Seattle.

Sailors: Baseball is a funny sport. The Mariners probably understood losing one of the first two games of this upcoming series. But because they were able to win the start of Tarik Skubal, they can head into Game 3 with increased spirits. The Mariners just need to split the two games in Detroit to force a trip back to Seattle.

Game 3 Prediction

I’ve had the Mariners take this series, partly because of how much I prefer their course to the non-Detroit parts. With that in mind, I think Gilbert will elevate the Mariners over the Tigers. Let’s call it a 4-1 Seattle win. Winner: Sailors. – RJ Anderson
