Why does Yogi Bear wear a tie?
So I was in the middle of taking a quiz on old cartoon characters, and while I was watching the Yogi Bear cartoon on YouTube (for research purposes!!!), I started wondering why he was wearing a tie. He lives in the woods, and there’s literally no reason for him to need a tie. In fact, why do all old cartoon characters wear ties?
In fact, the reason most old cartoon characters wear something around their neck is because it meant the animators didn’t have to bring the entire character to life every time they spoke.
Alternatively, with the character wearing something around their neck, they could just redraw the head as it spoke, and use the same cell for the character’s body. It’s a technique called “Animation is limited“.
This reduced cost and accelerated production. Honestly, this makes a lot of sense (and I feel kind of silly for noticing it now as a full-fledged adult)! But now that I know it, I can’t get rid of cartoon neckwear, and it’s very hard to find old cartoons that don’t have something hiding their neck.
Basically, all of the Jetsons (including Rosie) have something around their necks.
Quick Draw McGraw has a bandana.
Huckleberry Hound wears a bow tie.
Almost the entire cast Flintstones He has nothing around his neck (except Barney Rubble).
An oversized Scooby-Doo collar separates his body from his head.
Interestingly, Tom and Jerry’s neck is barely visible. Their heads are only placed on their bodies if they are not wearing any clothes.
As you can see, his body does not move in this scene, only his head!
Well, good luck trying to unsee this anytime you watch an old cartoon. I just keep looking at the necks trying to see how they hide them. Anyway, the more you know!
