Wilson’s flag football team is making a big move up the city division

There’s an interesting story unfolding at Los Angeles Wilson High School, where the girls’ soccer team has put itself in the mix to compete for the City Division Open Division title after an upset win over previously undefeated Eagle Rock last week.

Wilson is 23-1 and has at least a tie for the Northern League title. The Mules need to beat Marshall on Thursday to win the title outright.

Under coach Andres Ortega, the team has made tremendous improvement over three years, going from 1-8 to 10-15 to take down longtime power Eagle Rock this season.

Wilson turned to star athlete Anniyah Huteson, a young woman who went from receiver to quarterback. She used to play soccer with former Eagle Rock star Hayley Witherspoon. Huteson has passed for nearly 4,000 yards with 62 touchdowns.

Receivers/defensive backs Samantha Escarcega and Diana Vargas were also key contributors. Escarcega has 27 receptions for touchdowns.

The City Division will reveal the qualifying pairings on Saturday. San Pedro won the Marine League and Birmingham won the West Valley League. Defending champion Banning picked up a win over San Pedro.
