“People ask whether he is conservative or is it liberal,” Vans continued. “Will President Trump and JD VANCE attack certain things, and Democrats have not attacked other things?”
He said his ideas about this are that it is difficult to “put a 2000 -year -old institution in the policy of 2025 America.”
Vans added that as a Catholic conversion, he tries to “not play the Pope’s game. I am sure he will say many things I love. I am sure he will say some things that I do not agree with, but I will continue to pray for him and the church despite all of this, and that will be the way I deal with it.”

He continued, “There are many views that the Catholic leadership holds that, as you know, you may think about the right side of the spectrum. There are many opinions that he will carry and that may be more traditional on the left side of the spectrum. Then there are many opinions that are not easily exposed to politics at all.”
Vans said that although the church deals with public policy from time to time, “this is not what is going on around it.”
He concluded by saying: “I think it would be better for all of us if we allow the church to be about saving souls and did not try to fit them in a political box in advance.”
